Mooresville voters on Tuesday selected Chris Carney to be their next mayor by a wide margin.
Carney, a former town commissioner and N.C. state senator, easily defeated Commissioner Bobby Compton in the race to succeed Mayor Miles Atkins, who did not stand for re-election. Carney garnered 3,617 votes compared to 1,592 for Compton.
Mooresville also elected two new commissioners:
♦ In a close race for the Ward 2 seat, political newcomer Will Aven (545 votes) unseated long-time Commissioner Thurman Houston (519).
♦ In the race for Compton’s at-large seat on the town board, Eddie Karriker (3,103 votes) defeated Frank Owens (1,786).
Commissioner Eddie Dingler was unopposed in the Ward 1 race.
MGSD Board of Education
In the race for three seats on the Mooresville Graded School District Board of Education, incumbents Debbie Marsh (2,718 votes) and Kerry Pennell (2,580) held onto their seats. Newcomer Monica Bender (2,423) outpolled Theresa Knight (2,148) to win the third seat.
Troutman Mayor & Council
Mayor Teross Young was unopposed.
In the race for two open seats on the Town Council, incumbent Eddie Nau was the top vote-getter with 172 votes. Challenger Nicholas Jaroszynski finished second with 144 votes.
Incumbent George Harris was third with 140 votes, and Matt Crates was fourth with 102 votes.
Love Valley Mayor & Council
Timothy Meadows received 45 votes in the mayoral race. There were also 15 write-in ballots.
Five seats in the town commission were also on the ballot. The top-vote getters were Terri Rufty (44 votes), Ted Davis (43), Randy Lackey (39), Randy Ladd (32) and Mark Loden (32).
Harmony Mayor & Council
Sean Turner was unopposed in the mayoral race. He received 55 votes. Write-in candidates received four votes.
Results for four seats on the Town Council were unclear. There were 112 write-in votes.
Among candidates on the ballot, Scotty Harris received 31 votes, followed by Doug Galliher (26), Forrest Breedlove (25) and Julia Clanton (20).
All results are unofficial.
Voter Turnout
A total of 6,045 ballots were cast in all races. There were 44,252 eligible voters.

I tried to vote but was turned away. I live in Mooresville, but apparently not in the right spot. It makes no sense.
