Special to IFN

The 2024 Full Bloom Festival concluded a record-breaking run on Saturday evening with a memorable awards ceremony at The Inn on Front Street in Statesville.

The festival hosted more than 80 filmmakers from across the U.S., recorded its highest ticket sales to date, and screened its first-ever animated feature film. The festival also deepened its connections with the local community through partnerships with downtown businesses, showcasing the best of what Statesville has to offer visitors and residents alike.

One of the festival’s standout moments was honoring acclaimed filmmaker Ross McElwee with the Buzz Recipient Award for his remarkable achievements in film. McElwee, known for his influential documentaries, was celebrated for his lasting contributions to the cinematic arts. A full house watched his 2003 documentary, “Bright Leaves,” in Shearer Hall on Friday night.

Additionally, the Full Bloom Film Festival partnered with Purple Heart Homes for a special red carpet viewing of “The Keeper” —this year’s Best of Fest winner — on Saturday evening. The film, which addresses the crucial issue of veteran mental illness and suicide, resonated deeply with audiences and aligned with Purple Heart Homes’ mission to support veterans.
