A small group of domestic violence survivors and advocates met on the campus of Mitchell Community College on Thursday evening before participating in the “Walk a Mile in Their Shoes” walk around Downtown Statesville. Three Statesville police officers accompanied the group.
District Attorney Sarah Kirkman welcomed participants.
“I wish that we didnt have to be here, and I wish there wasn’t domestic violence,” she said. “We’re working toward that and we’re going to keep working toward that. Something we do really well is provide support for victims. If we can’t make sure it doesn’t happen at least we’re providing support for victims. And I think Iredell County does a great job at that.”
Mayor Costi Kutteh read a proclamation emphasizing the importance and history of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, which began in October 1989.
My Sister’s House, a Fifth Street Ministries’ home for survivors of domestic violence, served 872 women and their children last year.
I love this! I am a survivor, but many lost their lives to this. I am proud of the people who walked this walk for this special cause. It touched my heart.
