FROM STAFF REPORTS
Additional law enforcement officers were present on Iredell-Statesville Schools campuses on Friday as a precaution following rumors of school threats.
I-SS officials and local law enforcement agencies have been investigating school-based threats made on social media and found no evidence of a credible threat related to I-SS, according to Superintendent Jeff James.
In a letter to district parents, students and staff, James said that district personnel are aware of rumors circulating about school threats and he acknowledged that I-SS has received many phone calls and emails related to the threats. Staff are “continuously” monitoring social media, he said.
“We will continue to treat all threats seriously and in an abundance of caution, we worked with our law enforcement agencies to have additional officers present around the district today,” James said in the letter.
The superintendent encourages parents to talk with their children about the pressures associated with social media and the potential consequences of making threats. Making a threat of mass violence on educational property is a felony in North Carolina and “will be prosecuted to the highest extent,” James explained in the letter.
