Crosby Scholars of Iredell County invites prospective and returning students and parents to attend the organization’s annual Open House on Tuesday, September 17.

The drop-in event will take place at the Goodwill Workforce Development Center, located at 124 Fourth Crescent Street in Statesville, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Crosby Scholars helps local middle and high school students navigate the journey to higher education and rewarding careers. More than 1,400 students are currently enrolled in the free program.

Open house attendees will learn about Crosby Scholars’ programs and resources. Staff members and representatives from community partner organizations will be available to chat. Pizza and door prizes will be available for all. Active students and new enrollees can also take home a Crosby Scholars T-shirt.

Students can also join Crosby Scholars during in-school appearances. Registration is also available online at www.crosbyscholarsiredell.org. New registrations for the 2024-2025 school year end December 1.

“The benefits for Iredell County students are wide-ranging and completely free,” Executive Director Suzanne Wegmiller said. “Programs focus primarily on academic and life skills for middle schoolers. High schoolers receive specific help to apply and pay for post-secondary education.”

Crosby students can explore possible careers during “Try It Tuesday” sessions. Academies help improve academic skills. SAT and ACT prep sessions improve student chances of college acceptance. College tours allow students to experience campus life and envision their future. One-on-one advice for financial aid and scholarships help make that future possible.

Students must attend one academy session each year to remain active in the program. They must also maintain their GPA and complete at least two hours of community service.

“Volunteering invests students in their own community,” Wegmiller said. “Students can also discover new skills and interests that could lead to a future career.”
