Special to IFN

Mooresville Middle School (MMS) and Selma Burke Middle School (SBMS) are continuing their successful launch of their First Lego League clubs during the the 2024 – 2025 school year.

This is the second year of this program at Mooresville Graded School District’s two middle schools. First Lego League is a program designed to inspire young minds in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). The club, which works to maximize opportunity and achievement for MGSD middle school students, provides a fun and engaging way to learn about real-world problems and develop critical thinking skills.

The clubs would not be possible without the dedicated support of MGSD parent and staff volunteers and sponsors. They play a crucial role in mentoring students, providing technical assistance, and organizing team activities. Their commitment to this club ensures that students have the resources and guidance they need to succeed.

“We are incredibly grateful for the support of our parent volunteers and teachers,” said Jason Gardner, superintendent of Mooresville Graded School District. “Their expertise and enthusiasm have been invaluable in helping our two middle schools create a thriving FLL club.”

The First Lego League club has been busy working on this year’s challenge, SUBMERGED, in which participants explore the many ways to explore the ocean and problems that ocean explorers may encounter.

Teams of up to 10 students research, design, and build LEGO robots to solve specific missions. They also develop innovative solutions to real-world problems and present their findings to judges. At a competition on November 16, one of our SBMS teams, the Seahorses, won the Engineering Excellence Award and earned an alternate spot for the state competition in January.

MMS and SBMS encourage all middle school students to apply in the spring to join the 2025 – 2026 First Lego League club and experience the excitement of STEM learning.
