Iredell-Statesville Schools Board of Education members reviewed proposed changes to 34 district policies during the board’s meeting on February 12.
School boards are responsible for developing and revising policies that govern the actions of the board, district employees and students.
Board Chairman Bill Howell, in an interview, said that there are no major proposed changes to the policies. He explained that is a procedural process to make sure that district rules and regulations aren’t outdated.
Howell also mentioned that some of the recommendations are changes in language or minor tweaks recommended by the N.C. School Board Association.
During the meeting, the chairman said that the board must wait 30 days to vote on policy changes once they are proposed.
Howell asked the board to review Policy 2010: Board and Superintendent Relations this week.
The purpose of this policy is to “establish parameters for communication between the board and superintendent regarding division of operations.”
Part of the policy outlines the process that board members should follow when making a request for additional information:
“Any information requested by board members shall be directed to the Superintendent’s office. Information requested that requires the creation of materials that the school system does not regularly utilize for school business must be reviewed by the superintendent and board chair. Notification of the request and the superintendent’s decision to accommodate the request must be communicated in writing to the full board of education.”
School board Mike Kubiniec said that he disagrees with this policy.
“It restricts information to board members. The suggested revision is unnecessary, and I won’t support it,” he said.
Howell explained that board members can vote against any policy changes that they don’t support.

OTHER BUSINESS
In other matters, the board approved Lake Norman High School’s trip to Denmark.
…And just like that, the most prominent cast member of the Real Housewives of Iredell County showed up to turn the table over again. Can’t wait to see what “Trixie” Kubiniec has in store for next month’s episode.
Kubiniec doesn’t support that policy change because he knows he has already violated it. The board has no business doing their own investigations. Looking at you, Mike. Hopefully it’s one term and done for Kurn, Kubiniec and Sloan.
Speaking of Kurn, why does the Iredell GOP allow her to be in a leadership position?
Finally, don’t vote for Bobish unless you want another radical Moms for Liberty member on the board.
Mr. Cavendish, how can Mr. Kubiniec violate a policy that doesn’t exist yet and needs to be voted on? This has absolutely nothing to do with investigations as you stated. This particular policy has to do with board members requesting information and the possibility of the superintendent denying the request. Perhaps one could consider that a weaponization of information. Also, as it stands, board policy changes are not visible to the community at large, so you don’t get to see proposed revisions/additions/deletions until after the board votes on them. Where is the transparency in that?
