Participants in the 9th annual Iredell County Sheriff’s Office Teen Academy are getting an in depth look this summer at the important work ICSO personnel do throughout the community.

Organized by Captain Matt Burleyson, the academy is open to middle and high school students who want to familiarize themselves with the Sheriff’s Office. The students attend classes over four weeks.

Multiple deputies introduced themselves to the students and help educate them on various topics related to law enforcement and community service.

These academies help students think about making good choices, and hopefully deter them from making bad and/ dangerous choices. Topics include illegal drugs, drones, bullying, reporting, crime scene investigation, active shooter response, CPR and first aid, and much more. There is also a tour of the detention center and a graduation ceremony.

Tuesday‘s session did not disappoint.

Students enjoyed riding with the ICSO lake patrol on Lake Norman, watch a drone in action, take a tour of the mobile classroom, and experience impairment goggles firsthand.
