FROM STAFF REPORTS
Iredell County is accepting applications for a new leader for Emergency Medical Services following the recent termination of Director Blair Richey.
Richey, who was placed on non-disciplinary investigatory suspension with pay on June 12, was informed on August 9 that her employment was being terminated, effective August 11.
Assistant County Manager Rodney Harris notified Richey via email that he had “elected” to fire her for “reasons stated in the pre-dismissal notice.” Iredell Free News obtained a copy of Richey’s Final Decision Notice from county officials after filing a public records request.
Richey declined to comment.
County Manager Beth Mull also declined to comment on the reasons for Richey’s termination and the ongoing investigation of EMS, citing state law that prohibits the release of personnel information.
Harris, who started his position with the county on April 22, began an investigation of EMS in early June after staff complained about the “culture” in the department. The scope of the investigation widened as a result of information that was obtained in the early stages of the internal review, Mull said in an earlier interview.
Richey and Deputy Director Andrew Cardwell were suspended with pay on June 12. Cardwell was fired four days later for “violations of the Personnel Ordinance” and statements he made during a pre-disciplinary conference, according to public records. Cardwell’s termination was upheld following an unsuccessful appeal, county officials said.
EMS Logistics Officer David Cloer was appointed interim director earlier this week.
Although Richey has until August 24 to appeal her termination, the EMS director’s position has been advertised on the county website. Applications are being accepted through August 23. The published salary range for the position is $93,309 to $145,563.
