Iredell County will hold a public meeting regarding plans for the new Harmony Convenience Center on July 11.

The meeting will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Harmony Community Center, located 187 Highland Point Avenue in Harmony.

The county recently purchased a 40-acre parcel of land in Harmony for the proposed Convenience Center, which is intended to replace the existing location off West Memorial Highway.

During the meeting, county officials and project team members will provide information, answer questions and solicit feedback about the proposed project.

The proposed facility will serve as a collection point for residents to drop off their household waste and recyclables. It will meet and exceed all sanitary and environmental requirements. Nothing will be buried on site and all waste will be transported to the Iredell County Solid Waste Facility on Twin Oaks Road.

The center will be for residential use only and offers numerous benefits to the county and its residents.
Benefits include replacement of the outdated Harmony facility with a state-of-the-art, user-friendly service. The center will be designed for easy transfer of solid waste on a regular basis to the facility on Twin Oaks Road and will have updated controls to prevent issues associated with odors or pests.

A traffic management plan will be designed to prevent vehicle backup on Chief Thomas Road with all access points built in compliance with NCDOT requirements. The new location will save time and fuel costs for residents in the northern part of the county who have to travel upwards of seven miles to the existing center.
