A robotics team made up of students from Pine Lake Prep, Lake Norman High School and Davidson Day will compete at the FIRST Robotics World Championships in Houston, Texas, next week.
Team SPORK, which stands for “Students Providing Outreach in Robotic Kinship,” spent eight weeks designing, building, wiring, programming and testing its robot. After the “build season,” the team competed in two regional competitions where the top 40 teams qualified for the NC District Championship. From there, 13 teams were selected to advance to the World Championship.
This year’s game consists of shooting foam rings into a high goal and lower goal, and then climbing on a chain, in addition to an autonomous period.
At the regional competitions at UNC Pembroke and UNC Charlotte, Team SPORK placed first and third, respectively. The team also won the Team Spirit Award and Excellence in Engineering Award.
At the NC District Championship, Team SPORK came in fourth and qualified for the FIRST Robotics Championship in Houston.
The team expressed its appreciation for the support of its sponsors, including the Motorola Solutions Foundation, which paid the competition registration fees!
