FROM STAFF REPORTS
Seven of the eight Mooresville Graded School District schools received a grade of C or better in the 2023-2024 Accountability Report released by the N.C. Department of Instruction on Wednesday. And three of the district’s intermediate, middle and high schools exceeded the state’s growth projections.
District officials applauded the results and committed to providing resources to help in areas where MGSD fell short of state targets.
“Our students’ success on these assessments is a testament to the quality of education we strive to provide at MGSD. We are incredibly proud of the hard work our students, teachers, and staff have put in, especially considering the challenges of the past few years,” Superintendent Jason Gardner said in a news release.
“This growth reflects our community’s commitment to ensuring every student reaches their full potential. We realize we still have areas of improvement and more room to grow, but we feel good about the positive momentum we are building!” he added.
All five schools MGSD schools that are required to administer North Carolina End-of-Year/End-of-Course tests — Mooresville High School, Mooresville Middle School, Selma Burke Middle School, Mooresville Intermediate School, and East Mooresville Intermediate School — demonstrated “strong academic growth,” MGSD said.
Mooresville Middle School improved its school performance score by 18 points, moving from a D to a B rating.
Overall, the district had a significant positive change in its growth index score provided by the state when compared to the prior year. Mooresville High School, Mooresville Middle School, and East Mooresville Intermediate School all exceeded growth.
When comparing academic growth data from all 47 public and charter schools in Iredell County, the following MGSD schools performed at or near the top:
♦ East Mooresville Intermediate School ranks No. 1 among elementary/intermediate schools (No. 2 among all schools);
♦ Mooresville Middle School ranks No. 1 among middle schools (No. 3 among all schools); and
♦ Mooresville High School ranks No. 2 among traditional high schools (No. 5 among all schools)
Other Highlights
In addition to the outstanding growth shown by Mooresville Graded School District, other highlights of this year’s accountability results include:
♦ Ranked No. 1 in the state for graduation rate at >95 percent;
Ranked No. 7 in the state for ACT performance;
♦ Fourth-grade Math proficiency improved by 14 percent;
♦ Seventh-grade Math proficiency improved by 10 percent;
♦ Seventh-grade Reading proficiency improved by 5 percent; and

The district attributed its success to the collaborative efforts of teachers, parents, and the broader Mooresville community.
“This achievement is a shared victory,” said Board Chair Greg Whitfiled. “We are fortunate to have a community that values education and supports our schools in every way possible.”
MGSD remains committed to maintaining this momentum and continuing to provide a top-tier education to all students. The district will further target areas for improvement to ensure continued growth and success, according to the news release.
