FROM STAFF REPORTS

The N.C. State Highway Patrol has identified the man who died after a crash on Interstate 77 on Thursday following a high-speed chase.

Dashawn Samuels, 20, of Charlotte was pronounced dead at the scene of Thursday’s crash from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, troopers said.

Troopers attempted to stop Samuels for speeding — 80 mph in a 55 mph zone — and reckless driving on I-77 in Statesville, according to the NCSHP.

Samuels continued driving recklessly through traffic, troopers said, with his speed reaching 120 mph before he crashed near the 85 mile marker in Surry County.

The vehicle Samuels was traveling in had been reported stolen.

I-77 was closed for several hours as troopers conducted their investigation of the crash.
