Sam Parks’ interest in hot air ballooning took off in 1986 when he volunteered as the chase crew coordinator for the National Balloon Rally, which is now known as Carolina BalloonFest.
After a pilot from Louisville, Kentucky, gave him a ride that weekend, the Statesville native was hooked.
Within two years, he had his own balloon and was flying. Over the years, he has flown in eight different countries. His most epic ride was a three-day, 1,625-mile journey from Denver, Colorado, to Chapia, Quebec.
Today, after devoting the past five years to the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, Parks is preparing for his first Carolina BalloonFest as the executive director of National Balloon Rally Charities.
“I wanted to come home,” he said. “This is my hometown rally. That’s why I was so excited to come back.”
With the help of the Board of Directors and dozens of dedicated volunteers, Parks is busy handling all of the logistics for the 49th Annual Carolina BalloonFest, which is scheduled for October 18-20 at the Statesville Regional Airport.
Although last year’s event was marred by high winds that kept the balloons grounded and an issue with the transportation company that ran the shuttle buses, the festival was still a success by one important measure — it generated about $75,000 for local nonprofits, pushing 10-year contributions to about $1 million.
“Sometimes the weather deals you a hand that you just have to play,” Parks said. “Safety is always our top concern.”
A 1978 graduate of West Iredell High, Parks said he is focused on improving the customer experience.
That means ensuring there is adequate parking, sufficient shuttle buses for those who park remotely, and plenty of food, fun and entertainment for the whole family.
With less than three months until the 2024 event, the new director is working to land new sponsors and vendors, driving marketing decisions and keeping tabs on advanced ticket sales. He’s also recruiting volunteers to serve on the balloon chase teams.
Parks and the Board of Directors are focused on finding a new permanent location for one of the largest balloon rallies on the East Coast. The event outgrew the airport site years ago. Ideally, the board would like to acquire 200 acres.
Parks is excited to build upon the event’s rich history and continue sharing his love of hot air ballooning.
“It is a success story,” he said. “We want it to be around another 49 years.”
