FROM STAFF REPORTS
A northern Iredell County resident faces a felony child abuse charge after her 2-year-old son overdosed on illegal narcotics.
Iredell County Sheriff’s Office personnel responded to Iredell Memorial Hospital on Monday after Brittany Dawn Riley brought her son to the emergency room after finding him unresponsive, Sheriff Darren Campbell said in a news release.
Medical personnel were able to determine the child was overdosing and administered Narcan, Campbell said.
After the child was stabilized, he was transported to Brenner’s Children Hospital in Winston-Salem for further observation. The child is expected to make a full recovery, Campbell said.
ICSO detectives were immediately assigned to the case. During questioning, Riley admitted to using fentanyl and methamphetamine earlier that day, the sheriff said.
Riley, 31, of Sandra Drive, Statesville, was arrested and transported to the Iredell County Detention Center and charged with felony child abuse. Magistrate Thompson set her bond at $100,000.
The Iredell County Department of Social Services was notified.
