The Statesville Police Department is investigating a shooting that occurred early Friday morning on Gay Street.
Officers responded to the 1900 block of Gay Street about 3 a.m. after receiving a report of shots fired, according to an SPD news release.
Arriving officers were informed that an individual who had been shot multiple times had been driven to the hospital in a private vehicle, police said.
The shooting victim, identified as Desmond Reshawn Gray, 28, of Statesville, arrived at Iredell Memorial Hospital with life-threatening wounds to his legs, according to the news release. Gray was triaged and airlifted to Atrium Wake Forest Baptist Regional Medical Center in Winston-Salem, where he was listed in critical condition, police said.
Meanwhile, officers secured the crime scene, and investigators obtained a search warrant for the residence to allow the Criminal Investigations Division to process the scene thoroughly, according to the news release.
Officers also located and processed the vehicle in which Gray was transported.
