A Winston-Salem man faces felony drug charges after being pulled over by a Statesville police officer for running a stop sign.

The Statesville Police Department announced the arrest of Cortney Sirron Phifer Jr., 22, in a news release.

On Saturday, March 2, an SPD officer initiated a traffic stop on a white GMC for a stop sign violation at the intersection of Lerain Court and Dobson Avenue, police said.

Prior to the vehicle coming to a stop, the driver of the GMC discarded a bag from the vehicle, which landed on the roadway, according to the news release. Additional officers responded to the area and located the discarded bag, which contained approximately five pounds of marijuana, police said.

Officers also seized $3,805 as evidence, according to the news release.

Phifer was arrested and charged with Felony Possession of Marijuana, Possession with Intent to Sell and Deliver Marijuana, and Felony Maintaining a Vehicle for the Use or Sale of Controlled Substances. He was also served with a warrant for his arrest for felony probation violation.

Following his arrest, Phifer was presented before a magistrate where he received a $30,000 secured bond for the felony probation violation charge. He was denied bond for the drug-related charges.
