FROM STAFF REPORTS
Statesville native Garrison Bennett is headed to Hollywood following his impressive “American Idol” debut on Sunday night.
Bennett, who lives in Hickory, advanced to the next round following his strong rendition of “Superstition,” a No. 1 hit released by Stevie Wonder in 1972.
Judges Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Luke Bryan were impressed with the 18-year-old’s look and talent.
“You’ve got the look,” Richie said. “I rocked that same outfit to be exact.”
Perry was shocked by how similar Bennett looked to Richie. “Oh my God,” she exclaimed. “He looks like you!”
“I want to get a paternity test and make sure this isn’t Lionel’s child,” Bryan joked.
Following Bennett performance, the hosts praised his vocal ability and offered some advice.
Bryan compared him to “laid back” singer-songwriter Leon Bridges.
“I’m gonna need a little more energy,” Perry said.
“All you want to do now is bring your style,” Richie said. “Find your style, get your group together.”
Bennett, who works in landscaping, initially did not make the cut for “American Idol” after he auditioned virtually. But the producers called him back a month later for a second chance.
In an interview with ABC11, a Raleigh-Durham TV station, Bennett attributed his success to persistence.
“Anything is possible. If you have a goal, just keep pushing forward,” he said. “Just a few months ago I would have never thought I would have this opportunity.”
Great voice! Good luck in Hollywood.
Go for the win!
I saw the show and he was great!
