The Statesville Woman’s Club recently held its second Take-Out Hunger Day by partnering with Yokefellow Ministry in Statesville.

Special to IFN

The Statesville Woman’s Club (SWC) recently participated in their second National Day of Service with an emphasis on food insecurity.

The National Day of Service is a day in which all affiliated woman’s clubs all work in service to highlight an area of need, take action to address it, and raise public awareness about its importance.

The Statesville Woman’s Club once again hosted Take-Out Hunger Day and partnered with Yokefellow Ministry. This event benefited those in South Statesville who reside in a food desert, regions where people have limited access to healthful and affordable food due to low-income or transportation barriers.

Through the generosity of sponsors Blythe Construction, Erin Callahan with Fairway Mortgage, Gordon Foods, Food Lion and Matthew 25 Ministries, guests were served a box lunch that included a hamburger, hot dog, beans, chips and dessert.

A total of 395 meals were given out at the Yokefellow Helping Center and an additional 135 meals were delivered to families living in long-stay hotels without kitchen facilities and local subsidized housing residents. The focus was to provide people of the Shelton Avenue/Hwy 21 corridor and their families with a hot meal that day.

The best part of the event was being able to say Yes! It was apparent that many folks who came to the event were used to being told No on a regular basis.

The club also hosted a food drive benefitting Yokefellow, which brought in more 214 pounds of food to be distributed to those in need.

The club appreciates everyone in the community who supported this effort.
