The Town of Mooresville on Friday reported that thousands of gallons of untreated wastewater had flowed into the Dye Creek Branch as a result of flash flooding caused by Tropical Storm Debby.
An estimated 6,000 gallons of untreated wastewater from the Rocky River Wastewater Treatment Plant, located at 369 Johnson Dairy Road, flowed into the Dye Creek Branch on Thursday, town officials said in a news release.
The spill was not of a magnitude to cause immediate danger to human health or the environment, town officials said. As is typical during a significant rain event, a sizable portion of the untreated wastewater was rainwater that had entered the collection system near swelled creeks or in low-lying areas, according to the news release.
North Carolina General Statute 143-215.1C requires the owner or operator of any wastewater collection or treatment system to report when untreated wastewater discharges of 1,000 gallons or more reaches surface waters.
The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality, Water Resources Division was notified of the spill on Thursday, August 8, and is reviewing the incident.
Mooresville is quickly becoming the Love Canal of the South.
