Representatives from the Iredell and Wilkes County Fire Marshal’s Offices, Wilkes County EMS, Wilkes County Sheriff’s Office, and Emergency Management officials from both counties met with presiding officials of the Wilkes-Iredell Fire Department on Wednesday.
The meeting was part of an ongoing investigation into the viability of the department following the resignations of a significant number of members during the department’s annual meeting on Monday.
The investigation focused on evaluating whether the department remained capable of fulfilling its responsibilities to the community. After a thorough review and discussion, it was determined that the Wilkes-Iredell Fire Department remains viable and continues to provide adequate service.
However, officials will continue to monitor the department’s responses and operations closely.
To address recent concerns and ensure continued effectiveness, the department has outlined a corrective action plan. This includes an upcoming visit from the N.C. Office of State Fire Marshal to verify that required staffing levels are being met. In addition, the department will launch a recruitment campaign and host a community day to engage residents and attract new volunteers.
As part of ongoing oversight, county officials will continue to monitor the department’s performance. Should it become necessary, a second department may be assigned to respond jointly with Wilkes-Iredell to ensure uninterrupted service.
