Iredell Health System has completed the recruitment of its inaugural class of internal medicine resident physicians. This talented class of seven residents will begin at Iredell Memorial Hospital on July 1.

Over the past six months, Iredell Health received over 600 applications for its newly accredited internal medicine residency and participated in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). Medical students from all over the world apply to residency programs to secure a position.

“This is an incredible achievement for our health system as we transform from a community hospital to Iredell County’s first teaching hospital for resident physicians,” said Iredell Health System President & CEO John Green.

NRMP, or “The Match,” is a program to match medical school graduates to a residency program in their specialty. Medical students apply, interview, and rank their choices. A matching algorithm processes both student and program preferences to match the candidates to programs that benefit both parties.

This year’s Match Day was Friday, March 21. Match Day is a pivotal moment where residents learn if they matched and to which program.

At Iredell, residents will spend three years training to ultimately become internal medicine physicians.

“We look forward to welcoming our first class of residents who will spend the next three years completing their pathway to board certification in their specialty,” said Dr. Joseph Mazzola, the designated institutional official for Iredell Health System.

The program was approved for 21 total residents with each class consisting of seven.
