A number of Iredell-Statesville Schools’ students were recognized for outstanding academic and extracurricular achievements during Monday’s Board of Education meeting.
West Iredell High senior earns U.S. Military Academy appointment
Andrew McCarthy, a senior at West Iredell High School, was honored for earning an appointment to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, starting in the 2025-2026 school year.
McCarthy currently serves as the Warrior Battalion Commander in the Army JROTC program. His other achievements include being an Eagle Scout, varsity soccer player, and Student Body president. He has received multiple honors, such as the Superior Army JROTC Cadet Award and the Sons of the American Revolution Bronze and Silver Award.
“He makes me a proud principal. We are just beyond proud, and we continue to turn out excellence at West Iredell High School,” said Principal Ben Johnson.
North Iredell High FFA Teams have strong showing at regional competition

North Iredell High School’s FFA students were honored for placing first and third at a regional competition.
On November 25, North’s FFA chapter competed at regionals against Davie, Rowan, Mecklenburg, Cabarrus and Stanley counties vied for a chance to compete at the state contest this spring. FFA members had to work cattle, complete a processing plan, identify feeds, equipment, breeds, take a knowledge test and complete the Beef Quality Assurance certification process.
Placing first in the team cattle working contest members were Chase Dobson, Hunter Sipe and Wyatt Cline. Third-place winners in the team cattle working were Garrett Mayes, Garrett Renegar and Jacob Sipe.
North Iredell High School’s FFA Veterinary Science Team wins regional event

North Iredell’s FFA chapter also competed in the Northwest Region Veterinary Science Career Development Event.
Students complete medical calculations common in veterinary medicine, identify common parasites, equipment, breeds of animals and demonstrate the steps in performing a clinical procedure and proper animal handling. The event simulates what it is like to work in the veterinary science industry.
The team of Taylor Knox, Addison Lentz, Kara Murdock and Lillian Pope won first place.
