Mitchell Community College’s Equity and Inclusion Council will host a Celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Event on January 16.

The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held in Rotary Auditorium on the Statesville campus at 6 p.m.

The theme of the event is “Dream Big, Act Bold: Empowering Future Leaders.”

Leslie Morrison, executive director of Speak, Life and Live will be the guest speaker.

Morrison completed a prophetic counseling course and graduated from Life Christian University in Clemmons. She was ordained by the Rowan Association and received her master’s degree in pastoral studies from Gardner-Webb School of Divinity in Boiling Springs.

With a passion for helping others, she volunteers at Iredell Memorial Hospital as a chaplain and has also participated in multiple mission trips to Italy, Fiji, New Orleans, Israel, Egypt, Greece, Turkey, and Ecuador.

Attendees will also hear a student testimonial from Joshua Davidson, Mitchell’s Student Government Association president.

The celebration will conclude with a presentation of Mitchell’s Martin Luther King Jr. Dream Achiever Award, presented to African-American male students who have demonstrated academic excellence.
