For more than 20 years, Smith has provided strong financial stewardship, analytic expertise, and oversight for education institutions he has worked for ensuring they met their strategic goals, the district said.

“Mr. Smith brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to MGSD that he has developed throughout his extensive experience serving in higher education, as well as K-12 education,” MGSD Superintendent Jason Gardner said. “I am confident that he will continue to build upon the district’s long history of financial integrity and service to the community.”

Smith comes to MGSD from Oklahoma State University/Langston University, where he has served as director of Integrated Financial Services for the past four years. His work history also includes serving as a finance officer for Caldwell County Schools as well as the director of finance and budget for the N.C. School of Science and Mathematics.

Smith earned his bachelor’s degree in accounting from Winston-Salem State University and a Masters in Business Administration from Pfeiffer University.

In his spare time, Smith enjoys spending time with his family, traveling, and serving his community as a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity.
