A Statesville man who is on probation for felony drug convictions was arrested on new charges after attempting to avoid an Iredell County Sheriff’s Office traffic checkpoint.

Sheriff Darren Campbell announced the arrest of Kelley Lamont Allison Jr., 33, of Cline Street, Statesville, in a news release Tuesday.
Deputies assigned to the ICSO Aggressive Criminal Enforcement Team conducted a motor vehicle violation checkpoint on Highway 64 West near Tarlton Road on Friday, April 4. In the late evening hours, deputies observed a vehicle abruptly turn around in an apparent attempt to avoid the checkpoint, Campbell said.
Deputy C. Moncus located the vehicle moments later after it pulled into a driveway on Tarlton Road and turned off its headlights, according to the news release.
After making contact with Allison, the deputy detected a strong odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle, Campbell said. Deputy Moncus also observed an empty handgun holster in plain view, according to the news release.
During a search of the vehicle, the deputy found approximately 10 dosage units of MDMA, a small quantity of marijuana, and a handgun, the sheriff said.
As a convicted felon, Allison is prohibited by law from possessing a firearm.
Allison was taken into custody and transported to the Iredell County Detention Center, where Magistrate Russell issued a $25,000 secured bond.
Allison was charged with Felony Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, Felony Possession of a Schedule I Controlled Substance, Misdemeanor Carrying a Concealed Weapon, Misdemeanor Possession of Marijuana and Misdemeanor Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.
According to the ICSO, his criminal record includes the following charges: Misdemeanor Second-Degree Trespass, three counts of Misdemeanor Resisting a Public Officer, Two Counts of Felony Possession with Intent to Manufacture, Sell, or Deliver a Schedule II Controlled Substance, Felony Possession with Intent to Sell or Deliver Marijuana, Felony Offering Bribes, and Multiple Traffic Violations.
Allison is currently on probation for Felony Possession with Intent to Deliver or Sell a Schedule II Controlled Substance, Felony Possession with Intent to Sell Schedule VI Controlled Substance, and Felony Offer Bribes.
