FROM STAFF REPORTS
Iredell County Sheriff’s Office deputies are searching for a man wanted on charges in connection with a shooting that occurred early Thursday morning.
Sheriff Darren Campbell announced that investigators have obtained warrants for the arrest of John Dexter Wines, 33, of Mount Ulla Highway, Mooresville.
The charges are related to a shooting that occurred at the intersection of Wiggins Road and Mount Ulla Highway, Campbell said in a news release.
ICSO deputies responded to a report of a shooting at that location about 3:15 a.m. Thursday and found a victim with a gunshot wound to the lower abdomen, according to the news release.
Iredell County EMS personnel provided medical assistance, and the victim was transported to the hospital after a brief interview, Campbell said.
The suspect had fled the scene in a vehicle. The investigation revealed the shooting stemmed from a domestic dispute, and the victim and suspect were known to each other, Campbell said.
Detectives and crime scene investigators collected evidence and conducted interviews at the scene and the hospital. They determined that Wines had followed the victim’s vehicle earlier that night, Campbell said.
At the intersection, Wines blocked the victim’s car, leading to an altercation during which he shot the victim with a handgun before fleeing toward Rowan County, according to the news release.
Investigators learned that Wines had been wearing a court-ordered ankle monitor due to prior domestic violence charges, but he removed it while fleeing, Campbell said.
Arrest warrants have been issued for charging Wines with Felony Assault with a Deadly Weapon with Intent to Kill; Felony Possession of a Firearm by a Felon; Felony Violation of a Domestic Violence Protection Order with a Deadly Weapon; and Misdemeanor Interfering with an Electronic Monitoring Device.
The investigation is ongoing, and additional charges may follow, Campbell said.
Anyone with information on the whereabouts of John Dexter Wines is urged to contact the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office at (704) 878-3100.
According to the ICSO, Wines’ criminal history includes the following charges: two counts of Misdemeanor Larceny, Felony Second-Degree Kidnapping, Felony Assault by Strangulation, Reckless Driving to Endanger, Felony Serious Injury by Vehicle, five counts of Driving while License Revoked, Misdemeanor Second-Degree Kidnapping, Misdemeanor Simple Worthless Check, Felony Assault with a Deadly Weapon with Intent to Kill, Felony Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, Driving While Impaired, Felony Habitual Misdemeanor Assault, and Multiple Driving Violations.
