Special to IFN
The Statesville Woman’s Club recently held its March meeting.
The guest speakers were Tevin Carr and Capra Harris, “a dynamic duo” leading the charge at Insomniacs Inc., an Iredell County based nonprofit that is dedicated to empowering communities through arts, education and innovation.
The two mostly spoke about the HipKnoTics program, which aims to teach middle school students social, emotional and intellectual skills necessary to succeed in life. HipKnoTics also gives students the chance to use art, multi-media, creative writing and creative expression through social-emotional learning. With hands-on experiences in a state-of-the-art podcast studio, the unit culminates in semester-end showcase events like live concerts and podcast productions.
The program also teaches students financial, cultural and academic literacy; serves from 30 to 50 students at Oakwood IB Middle School and American Renaissance School; and for the third year will be providing a free six-week summer camp for underserved children at the Bentley Community Center.
