“Andrew,” a student at Statesville High School, was dressed to the nines in a black blazer and matching tie at Unity Center for the recent Iredell-Statesville Schools prom for exceptional children.

While the “Cha Cha Slide” played in the background, he opted to check out of the photo booth, which printed out instant photos for guests. But as soon as the couple songs came on, he was the first to find a dance partner and join the others on the dance floor for a slow dance.

That’s when Andrew’s shyness started to subside, and he was up and dancing to some of the faster songs with his classmates.

The EC Prom was designed to create a more inclusive and accessible experience for students with disabilities and their families. The Unity Center in Statesville was transformed into a festive venue for the event. The photo booth helped capture all of the joyful moments.

“This is one of the most special days of the year for our students, staff, and community,” explained Rhonda McClenahan, executive director of exceptional children for I-SS. “Our department and volunteers work hard to ensure each student feels like a star.”

The annual event brings together students from across the district for a magical experience filled with dancing, music, refreshments, and community support.

According to Crystal Douglas, coordinator of special district classrooms and organizer, the event took all students’ needs into account, including a sensory room and making sure students with wheelchairs didn’t have any barriers.

Douglas said that she loved seeing the smiles on everyone’s faces and watching the students interact and dance with their peers.

According to organizers, EC Prom is more than a celebration — it’s a testament to the district’s commitment to ensuring that every student is seen, valued, and celebrated.

Teachers, support staff, and volunteers from across the district work to make this event memorable. Local businesses and community members also play a vital role by donating time, services and resources.
