“Coach” Doyle Mintz, 82, of Statesville, N.C., died Wednesday, April 22, 2020. He was born in Hendersonville, N.C., on April 2, 1938, to the late Frasher Mintz and Bertie McCarson. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Rozella Snelling.
Coach Mintz was a graduate of Western Carolina University with a Masters Degree in Physical Education. He had taught Advanced PE, Health, Driver’s Education and coached football, golf, track, baseball, and basketball for many years prior to his retirement. Coaching and teaching had him serving at several schools, including East Henderson High School, Chase High School, Lake Norman High School and Statesville High School.
The adage “Once a Greyhound, Always a Greyhound” never rang more true for anyone. Coach loved people and saw the good in everyone. He loved dancing, especially shagging and had been a member of the Lake Norman Shag Club for many years. The beach was his favorite place. He enjoyed music, loved life, and Clemson University! Go orange and purple!
Those left to cherish his memory are a daughter, Andrea Shook (Christopher) of Maiden; a brother, Danny Mintz (Wanda); a sister, Phyllis Maxwell; numerous nieces and nephews, a fur grandbaby, Zeus; and a cherished friend, Deborah Ellis.
Coach will lie in state at Nicholson Funeral Home on Friday, April 24, 2020, from 12 to 5 p.m. and Saturday, April 25, 2020, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for those who wish to pay their respects. A private service will be held later.
