Edward Joseph Hayes Sr., 78, of Mooresville, N.C., passed away on Thursday, April 1, 2021, at Gordon Hospice House with his family by his side. Edward was born in Limerick City, Ireland, on April 24, 1942, to the late Denis Hayes and Kathleen Hayes (Phillips). In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Rita Hayes (O’Halloran).
He is survived by his brothers, Seamus Hayes (Ferga), and Denis “Morey” Hayes (Nora); and sister, Ann Hayes (Joe), all from Ireland; daughters, Michelle Rumple (Craig) and Denise Hayes; sons, Edward Hayes Jr. (Kathryn) and Gordon Hayes (Susan); grandchildren, Caitlin Rumple, Chloe Rumple, Caroline Hayes, and Audrey Hayes; and 41 nieces and nephews.
He was an active member of St. Therese Catholic Church, Mooresville. He worked at Burlington Industries from 1975 as a plant manager until his retirement. Edward was a member of Mt. Moriah Masonic Lodge #690 and received the highest degree awarded to an Irishman. He was a natural storyteller and never met a stranger. He will be greatly missed by his many friends.
A Funeral Mass to celebrate the life of Edward Hayes will be conducted at St. Therese Catholic Church, Mooresville, at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 5, 2021, with Father Mark Lawlor officiating. Burial will follow the service at Glenwood Memorial Park, Mooresville.
