Mrs. Gladys Ruth Daniels Lackey, 88, the beloved daughter of the late Joe Roy Daniels and Eula Mae Hickman Daniels, was born in Iredell County on May 16, 1932. She entered into eternal rest on February 7, 2021, at the Gordon Hospice House in Statesville, N.C., following a short illness. She was married to William Carter Lackey Sr, who preceded her in death. In addition to her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by a son, William Carter Lackey Jr.; a son-in-law, Rev. James C. Campbell Sr.; a grandson and three great grandchildren.

Mrs. Ruth was a graduate of Unity High School and was member of St. Joseph Baptist Church, where she was the oldest member and served as a Deaconess. She retired from Broyhill Furniture Company and was a caregiver to others. She enjoyed cooking and baking, watching the Bachelor, Tiger Woods, soap operas, and Jimmy Swaggaret. She also loved working word puzzles, gardening.

Survivors include John (Raynell) Poole of Hiddenite, N.C., Sylvia Campbell of Taylorsville, N.C., Carolyn (Bobby) Campbell of Douglasville, Ga., Gladys (Kenneth) Speaks of Yadkinville, N.C., Helen (Scooter) Grinton, Teresa (Richard) Wellman of Taylorsville, Terry (Phyllis) Lackey Sr. of Hiddenite, N.C., and Dewanna ( Leslie) Howell of Taylorsville; one brother, Larry Daniels of Winston-Salem, N.C.; three sisters, Dolleither Daniels of Statesville, Louise Daniels of Long Branch, N.J., and Mary Jean (Bishop Elect Lonnie) Gray of Charlotte, N.C.; daughter-in-law, Teresa Woods Lackey; in-laws, Betty Morrison, Belinda Daniels, Julia Lackey, Lona Belle Lackey, Alice Rankins, Russell Lackey, Linda Lackey, Harry (Barbara) Lackey and Janes Lackey; twenty-two grandchildren; forty-nine great grandchildren; ten great-great grandchildren; a special friend, Betty Millsaps; the St. Joseph Baptist Church Family; and a host of nephews, nieces cousins, other relatives and friends.

A Celebration of Life Service will be conducted Friday, February 12, 2021, 1 p.m. at St Joseph Baptist. Mrs. Lackey will lie in state thirty minutes prior to the service at the church. Rev. Dr. Darrick Clemons will officiate and Bishop Elect Lonnie Gray will deliver the eulogy. Burial will follow at the Zion Chapel AME Zion Church Cemetery in Hiddenite, N.C.

There will be no public visitation due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Rutledge and Bigham Funeral Home, along with other funeral homes across the country, has been issued a mandate to limit the number of family and/or friends at funeral services.
