Margie Loray Johnson Brooks, 82, of Statesville, N.C., was welcomed into her heavenly home by her savior Jesus Christ on Friday, October 15, 2021. She was met there by her loving husband and soulmate, Dwight Eugene (Gene) Brooks, who preceded her in death in 2005. She was also preceded in death by her parents John and Flossie Johnson, and her five sisters.
Left to cherish her memory are her three children, Jane VanHoy (Bryan), David Brooks, and Debbie Morgan (Phil); and four grandchildren, Jason (Megan), Megan, Molly, and Paul (Charity); two great-grandchildren, Ty and Cody; and several nieces and nephews.
Born and raised in North Wilkesboro, N.C.,, she and Gene moved to their dream home in Statesville in 1966. They raised their own family in a neighborhood they loved and served humbly. Margie was a homemaker until her youngest child started school, then went to work at Hunter Brothers and later Jantzen Sportswear, the company from which she retired. She and Gene were members at Command Baptist Church.
Margie was a talented cook and prepared countless meals for her family, extended family, friends, and neighbors. She was an expert at making ordinary things beautiful. She skillfully decorated cakes and created floral arrangements. She also enjoyed restoring and painting old furniture and sewing too. Several of her friends would come to her to have their hair “set.” Margie had a big heart and would welcome those who needed a bed for a night or a month until they got back on their feet.
Gene and Margie always kept a huge vegetable garden and cheerfully shared what they grew with their neighbors. Margie continued growing a garden for many years after Gene passed. Her grandchildren loved spending the night with her, and she was very adept at spoiling them. Her family was the joy and focus of her life and they will dearly miss her.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, October 17, 2021, at Hunting Creek Cemetery, where she will be laid to rest beside Gene. Reverend Tony Fox will officiate. No formal visitation.
Chapman Funeral Home is serving the family of Margie Brooks.
