Mrs. Ona Faye Porter Blevins, 89, recently of Hendersonville and formerly of Hartness Road, Statesville, N.C., passed peacefully into the arms of the Lord on Saturday, April 10, 2020, in the care of the Elizabeth Hospice House.
Mrs. Blevins was born at home on October 18, 1931, on Happy Hill in Jonesville and was the daughter of the late Lloyd H. and Carrie King Porter. On her 21st birthday, October 18, 1952, she married Jessie (Jay) Talmadge Blevins, the “boy next door” and her forever sweetheart, who preceded her in death in 2007. Mrs. Blevins attended Jonesville City Schools and took classes at Mitchell Community College.
Throughout her life, she enjoyed trying her hand at many different endeavors. She was a wonderful cook and loved to bake. For 15 years, she turned those skills into a successful business decorating beautiful cakes and catering weddings and other special events. After retiring from Northwestern Bank, she also started selling Avon and was a dedicated Avon lady for 30 years.
Mrs. Blevins was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother (Memaw), and great grandmother. She loved family time, talking with friends, reading, watching ballgames and old movies, and working in her flower gardens. She always enjoyed visits from family and friends and loved decorating for holidays or celebrations and baking treats to make it special. She was a member of Crystal Waters Baptist Church, formerly Wayside Baptist Church, where she served on the caring committee, taught the children’s Sunday School class, and helped organize Bible School and special events for many years.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Lewis, Gene, and Larry Porter; and three sisters, Ennis Luffman, Reba Saleem, and Peggy Ratledge.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Sherry Kilby of Statesville; son, Stoney Blevins and wife Candace of Hendersonville; eight grandchildren, Andrew (Elizabeth) and Adam Kilby (Daphne) of Statesville; Spencer (Brenna), Cole, Lydia, Sarah, and Eli Blevins of Hendersonville; and Hannah Stevenson (Kristian) of Lynchburg, Va.; four great-grandchildren, Vivienne, Luke, Matilda, and Madeline Kilby of Statesville; a brother, Don Porter and wife Joyce of Hamptonville; nieces and nephews and many sweet friends.
A service to celebrate the life of Mrs. Blevins will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 15, at Troutman Baptist Church with Pastor John Stevenson officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery. The body will lie in state at Troutman Baptist Church from 1 to 2 p.m. prior to the funeral.
