Bette Burns Chastain was born in Charlotte, N.C., in 1928. She was the daughter of the late Charles W. and Dorothy P. Burns. She attended schools in Charlotte and Charleston, S.C. graduating from St. Paul’s on Younges Island, S.C., in 1945.
She was a secretary at Barium Springs Home for Children for 27 years, retiring in 1998. She was a member of Western Avenue Baptist Church, the Shoop Sunday School Class, and Young at Heart Seniors Group.
She was married to James O. Chastain (deceased April 21, 2014) in Charlotte on July 17, 1948. She is survived by a daughter, Joy C. Cline (Jerry); a son, Nathan A. Chastain (Maura), all of Statesville; three grandchildren: Jeffrey T. Cline of Durham; Julie C. Estes (Steve); and Matthew C. Chastain of Statesville; and two great granddaughters, Rachel and Sarah Estes. Other survivors are a sister, Candace B. Susco (Nicholas) of Charlotte and a sister-in-law, Pam Burns of Charlotte, a niece and four nephews. Bette was a loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.
A public lie in repose will be held on Wednesday, April 27, 2022, from 12 to 4 p.m. at Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held on Thursday, April 28, 2022, at 1 p.m. at Oakwood Cemetery with Dr. Jeff Spry officiating.
