James “Marvin” Shives, 89, of Statesville, N.C., passed away on January 26, 2022. Marvin was born and raised in Statesville. He was preceded in death by his loving parents, Horace A. Shives and Blanche Bass Shives. Also preceding him in death were his three brothers, Homer E. Shives, Jimmy O. Shives and Grady W. Shives.
Marvin was an Army veteran and served in the Korean Conflict. He was a retired building contractor and a past member of the Home Builders Association. He always enjoyed hunting and fishing. After retiring, Marvin enjoyed all aspects of farming, including raising cows and horses, growing his small vegetable garden, baling hay, and most of all he enjoyed spending time with his pet dog, “Pepper.”
Marvin was also a proud father, mentor, and best friend to his son.
Left to cherish his memory are his son, Joel (Beverly) Shives of Statesville; a granddaughter, April (Elbert) Higgins; two great-granddaughters, Kearston and Brooklyn Higgins, all of Claremont; a brother, Freddy (Lida) Shives of Statesville; and many loving extended step-grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and friends.
The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff of the VA Medical Center in Salisbury for the excellent care given to Marvin during his time of need.
A graveside service with Military Honors will be held at 3 p.m. on Monday, January 31, 2022, at Iredell Memorial Gardens.
