Colene Messick Small, 83, of Mooresville, N.C., passed away on March 2, 2022. She was born on January 5, 1939, in Statesville, N.C., to the late Otis and Florence Pippin Messick.

First and foremost, Colene loved God and her church. She was an active member of Missionary Methodist Church and served as choir director. She read her Bible and enjoyed a “Tootsie Pop” every night. She loved her family and her extended family. She was “Mama Colene” to many people and would help anyone she could. She treasured all her grandchildren especially. Colene also enjoyed traveling to the beach when she could, and she was an avid reader. She was deeply loved by her family and will be greatly missed.

In addition to her parents, Colene was preceded in death by her husband, James Small; brother, Melvin Messick; and sister, JoAnn Shumake.

She is survived by her children, Ronnie Small (Laurie), Donnie Small (Terri Smith), Steve Small (Selena), Tim Small (Tammy), and Crystal Small Rambo (Justin); 13 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren; brother Leroy Messick; numerous nieces and nephews; and best friend, Pat Clubb.

Visitation will be held on Friday, March 4, 2022, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Cavin-Cook Funeral Home and Crematory, Mooresville, N.C. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 5, 2022, at Mooresville Missionary Methodist Church, 311 Clover Street, Mooresville, N.C., with Pastor Randall Macon officiating. Burial will follow at Iredell Memorial Gardens at 1 p.m.
