While in high school, Garry joined the Air National Guard. He was honorably discharged upon graduation and then enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. He and Margie enjoyed taking their boat to their home on Emerald Isle, N.C., and ocean fishing. He truly loved the beach. They found joy in doing things together, and with their daughters and grandchildren. Garry was a NASCAR fan and attended numerous races. In April 1989, he and Margie became members of the USCGT Auxiliary. They liked doing safety patrols on Lake Norman and were still members of the Auxiliary after more than 33 years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Keisha L. Macemore; his brother, Stephen W. Overcash; and his sister, Johann Overcash Fox.
