Charles “Rex” Childers exited the off ramp to heaven on Wednesday, December 6, 2023, after enjoying 96 wonderful years of life.

Rex was born in Hanes, N.C., in 1927. He grew up in Thomasville, N.C. After graduating from Thomasville High School, he joined the U.S. Navy in 1944 and served on a Destroyer. Rex served a total of seven years and eight months in the Navy and Navy Reserves.

Rex then enrolled at N.C. State University, where he earned his degree in Textiles, graduating in 1953. He also was president of the Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity.

After graduation he accepted a position with Dixie Yarns Inc., where he worked for 41 years and rose to the position of president of the yarn division.

Through the Navy and his business travels, Rex was able to visit many countries abroad. But his favorite adventure was traveling 1,373 miles on the Tennessee, Ohio, and Mississippi Rivers in a 20-foot open boat in 1971 with his son Tom, ending their trip in New Orleans. Needless to say, there were memories made that will last forever.

Rex was preceded in death by his parents, Marshall and Gladys; his loving wife Betty; and his son, Chuck; as well as his siblings, Doris, Opal, Joyce, Irma, and Aubrey.

Rex is survived by his dedicated son, Tom and his wife Vicki of Cornelius, N.C. He is survived by nieces and nephews. Tom and Vicki are incredibly grateful for the wonderful neighbors and friends that surrounded Rex over the years.

In lieu of flowers or donations, Rex requested that you do something nice for a deserving person.

Entombment will be in High Point, N.C.
