Dr. George Vernon Irons Jr., 91, passed away on April 27, 2023, at his home. He was born on October 21, 1931, in Randolph County, Ala., to the late George Vernon and Velma Wright Irons.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sons, David and Dwight Irons, and brother, Bill Irons.
Dr. Irons was a cardiologist at Mid Carolina Cardiology with 66 years of experience. He was a 1956 graduate of the University of Alabama School of Medicine at Birmingham. From 1961-1964, he was at Billings Hospital, University of Chicago, Assistant Resident in Pathology, Assistant Resident and Resident in Medicine, 1964-66, Duke University, Durham, N.C., Fellowship Cardiovascular Disease. He had many published articles in the New England Journal of Medicine and the American Journal of Medicine, about Cardiovascular Research and therapy for heart diseases.
Dr. Irons proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force as a captain and medical flight surgeon from 1957-1960.
He is survived by his loving wife, Linda Johnson Irons; children, Tracy Hildreth and Chad Umstead (Nicole); grandson, Dylan Irons; and grandchildren, Randy Tarleton (Mandy), Ty and Talon Umstead.
A Memorial Service for Dr. Irons will be held on Saturday, June 3, at 1 p.m. at Grace Covenant Church, 17301 Statesville Road, Cornelius, NC 28031, with Rev. Paul Turnbedsky officiating. A visitation for family and friends will follow the service in the Clanton Hall.
