Ernest “Ernie” Edward Sides III, PhD, passed away on Sunday, August 13, 2023, at his home in Statesville, N.C.
Ernie was born to Ernest “Buddy” and Mary Sides of Troutman, on March 8, 1951. He was a graduate of South Iredell High School and N.C. State University. Following graduation, he entered the U.S. Marine Corps and served for over 20 years as an aviator and paratrooper. He was a veteran of Desert Storm. During his military career, Ernie obtained his master’s degree from Troy State University and his doctorate degree in public administration from Old Dominion University. After retiring at the rank of Major, he worked for several years at American LaFrance and then for the Iredell County School System as a special needs teacher.
He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Statesville, serving as a deacon and a Sunday school teacher. Ernie battled multiple myeloma for five years until his passing. Prior to his illness, he was an avid fisherman, hunter, reader and bluegrass picker. He always had a special place in his heart for the children he was able to serve.
Those left to cherish Ernie’s memory include his wife of 48 years, Madge Kestler Sides; his children, Rob Sides (Kelly); Cory Sides (Tanya) and Laura Sides. He is further survived by seven grandchildren, Tucker, Luke, Finn, Hudson, Brielle, Brady and Connor; two brothers, Jeff Sides (Debbie) and Steve Sides; and 15 nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, August 17, at Bethel Baptist Church in the family life center with Rev. Steve Kramm officiating. Family will receive friends prior to the service from 9 to 10 a.m. Burial will follow at New Perth ARP Cemetery with full military honors.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Samaritan’s Purse or to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

I taught with Ernie in the Exceptional Children’s Program in ISS. He was a special person and a friend to offer guidance. He had a great sense of humor. Condolences to his family.
