Sherrill Eugene Edwards, 90, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 16, 2023, at the Carolina Caring Hospice House in Newton.

Sherrill was born March 8, 1932, to the late Samuel Eugene Edwards and Iva Durham Edwards. He attended Orange County Schools before enlisting in the U.S. Army. He served as a Sergeant First Class in the Korean War, where he received a Bronze Star Medal.

Sherrill retired from Blanton Moore. He was a talented woodcraftsman building cherished pieces of furniture for many friends and family members. Sherrill loved gardening, hummingbird watching, family beach trips, and weekly dinners with his grands and great grands.

Sherrill is survived by three children, Gene Edwards (Denise), Wayne Edwards, and Darlene Brown; six grandchildren, Brandy Edwards Stewart (James), Josh Edwards, Amy Brown Anderson (Rhyne), Daniel Edwards, Jamie Hornsby (Scott), and Victoria Edwards; five great grandchildren, Antonia Elizabeth Best, Connor Hornsby, Ty Rhyne Anderson, Templeton Brooke Anderson, and Olivia Helen Gwynn Edwards; and one sister, Jane Hatch of Hillsborough.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Faye Ray; brother, Ray Edwards; and the mother of his children, Inez Speaks Poole.

Sherrill’s service will be held at 3 p.m. on Friday, January 20, 2023, at Troutman Funeral Home with Rev. Brian Poindexter officiating. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. The family will visit with friends on Friday from 2 to 3 p.m. at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Daniel Edwards, Rhyne Anderson, Johnny Edwards, Dean Moize, Ed Krider, and Ricky Harris. Josh Edwards, James Ray, Frank Edwards, and Archie Horn will serve as honorary pallbearers.
