Barbara Kunkle Campbell, 92 of Statesville, N.C, died Thursday, September 5, 2024, at Novant Hospital in Charlotte, N.C.

She was born September 2, 1932, in Iredell County, the daughter of the late Earl H. and Treva Lackey Kunkle.

Barbara was a member of the Fellowship Class of Matthews United Methodist Church. She had worked as secretary to Rev. Robert Tuttle at Broad Street United Methodist Church after graduating from Statesville Senior High School and completing a business course at Mitchell Community College. She was also employed as secretary to State Senator G.P. Callison in Greenwood South Carolina, and Southeastern Waterproofing in Charlotte, N.C. Barbara enjoyed living in El Paso, Texas, and Titusville, Fla., with her husband, Jim Campbell, and family when Jim was employed with and transferred there by Douglas Aircraft Co., later known as McDonnell-Douglas. She was preceded in death by her husband Jim in 1993.

Barbara loved being involved in her community and was proud to have been named “Matthews Lion of the Year” in 2009. While with the Lions Club, she enjoyed volunteering at Camp Dogwood. She loved reading her Bible, and had helped raise the children of several families. One of her favorite hobbies was playing tennis. Her father built a clay court in the backyard so she could play anytime she wanted. She was also a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy.

Those left to cherish her memory include two sons, Gary Campbell (Annette) and Craig Campbell (Vicki); four grandchildren, Hollis, Nathan, Marna, and Kasey; along with several great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was also preceded in death by a son, Jason Campbell, and a brother, Bernard Kunkle.

A graveside service will be held Saturday, September 28, 2024, at 2 p.m. at Oakwood Cemetery with Pastor James Lewis officiating

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Matthews United Methodist Church, 801 S. Trade Street, Matthews, NC 28105.
