Darryl “Pern” Lee Shope, 72, of Mooresville, N.C., passed away on Monday, February 12, 2024, at his residence after a long battle with cancer.
Darryl was born on August 6, 1951, in Haywood County, N.C., to William Calvin and Genevieve Shope. He received a Bachelor of Science degree from Gardner-Webb University in 1973. He wore many hats, including working as a supervisor for UPS, working for NASCAR, and owning Foothills Medical Supply for the last 19 years.
He was an avid sports fan. He refereed high school football for many years. He sponsored multiple youth athletics and enjoyed cheering on Appalachian State University as well as the North Carolina Tar Heels. He was a member of Lake Forest Church in Huntersville.
He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Susan Bell Shope, as well as daughters, Lorrie Greene (Jim) Toni Shope, and Shannon Parton (Jeremy); mother, Genevieve Shope; sisters, Carolyn Stamey, Donna Fowler, and Sheila King; one brother, Larry Shope; grandsons, Matthew, Zachary and Sawyer Greene and Liam Nations, granddaughters, Ellie and Kimsey Parton; sister-in-law Judy Rose; special nephew Martin Rose, as well as many other nieces and nephews, friends, and Moose, his dog.
Darryl was preceded in death by his father, William Calvin Shope.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, February 18, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Cavin-Cook Funeral Home and Crematory in Mooresville, N.C. A private service and burial will be held on February 19, 2024.
