David Kirk Mize, 68, passed away on January 10, 2024. He was born in Boone, N.C., on May 22, 1955. Shortly after, his family moved to Statesville, and he lived in Iredell County for the rest of the life. He spent his childhood in Statesville, his teen years in Barium Springs, and most of his adult years in the Eufola community.
David began teaching math at West Iredell High School in the fall of 1976 and taught there until his retirement. He excelled at teaching and never lost his enthusiasm for it, returning after retirement to teach some advanced courses at Statesville High School and to tutor at the Career Academy and Technical School.
David was gregarious, open, and loyal. He amassed friends from all the eras and venues of his life, remaining close to classmates, students, students’ parents, and colleagues over decades.
David was preceded in death by his parents, Richard L and Virginia W Mize. He is survived by his wife, Catherine Higbee Mize; brothers Richard A. and Robert E. Mize (Elizabeth); nephews Sam and Charlie and niece Lily Mize; and grandniece, Claire Mize.
David’s hobbies and interests included woodworking, fishing, and traveling with Catherine to historic inns.
The family suggests that any memorials be made in support of pancreatic cancer research, to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, for example.
Troutman Funeral Home is serving the family.
So many memories of my friendship with David through our high school and college years. Praying comfort for Catherine, Bobby, Andy, and family
David was loved and respected by so many of us. Such a good man. He will be so missed. Prayers for Catherine and family.
David and I painted schools during our college breaks with Iredell Co. maintenance. Always a positive and friendly fellow and gifted in his teaching math. Rest in peace and RISE in GLORY!
I only knew him for a semester when he covered an adjunct position, but he was by far the best math instructor I had at Mitchell. He made class interesting and fun, and I always looked forward to attending. Deepest condolences to his friends and family.
David Mize was the best math teacher I ever had. Years after high school when I would see David he never forgot his students. God has got a good one. He was so kind and sweet man. Mrs. Mize just know he is in God’s loving arms and we pray to be there one day with him. God bless and prayers for the family.
David was a wonderful friend to our families in Sharon Colony! He was a good friend for Anne, Brett and Keith. He spent time with all of us, the Hollands, Harris’ and Popes. Playing tennis and just being himself around the teenagers. He was loved by all. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife and family.
