Mrs. Dorothy Mentia Seigle Heaggans, 82, of 1103 Rolling Lane, Statesville, N.C., passed away at her home on Wednesday, June 12, 2024, surrounded by family. She was born in Rowan County on June 13, 1941, and was the daughter of the late Gonzell Salmon Seigle and Lucinda Williams Seigle. She was married for over 64 years to Joseph Theodore Heaggans, who survives. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Helena Heaggans; a granddaughter, Carmelokris Brinson; and other relatives.

“Mama Dot,” as she was affectionally called, was a graduate of Dunbar High School in East Spencer and was a member of Word of Life Family Worship Center in Salisbury. At one time, she was employed by RHA as a Home Manager. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend and enjoyed reading, shopping and cooking. One of her favorite sayings was, “Treat people the way you want to be treated.”

She leaves to cherish the memory of her life her husband, Joseph Theodore Heaggans of the home; seven sons, Joseph T. (Tammy) Heaggans Jr. of Statesville, Christopher (Angela) Heaggans of the home; Eric Heaggans of Statesville, Marvin (Michelle) Heaggans of Concord, Dr. Raphael Heaggans of Washington, D.C., Charles (Marlecia Kay) Heaggans of Statesville, and Corey (Katika) Heaggans of Villarica, Ga.; three daughters, Gwen (Craig “Dap”) Morrison, Tammy (Tony) Kesler and Emily Heaggans, all of Statesville; one brother, Alonzo Williams of Kissimmee, Fla.; five sisters, Rev. Doris (Jay) Glaspy of Newark, N.J., Josephine (James) Peck of Spencer, Elizabeth Burton of Granite Quarry, Dr. Martha (Elder Clinton) Starks of Granite Quarry, Rev. Cindy Wilson of New Port News, Va., and Ygerna Gibson of Salisbury; her sisters-in-law, Vernie (John) Smith of Cleveland, Alfreda (Robert) Blackwell and Melzeta Heaggans, both of Troutman; her 22 grandchildren, Craig Morrison Jr., Chadrick Morrison, Valerie Heaggans, Tramaine (Kingsley) Harrison, Dominique Lassiter, Tyler Heaggans, Gabriel Heaggans, Erica Martin, Justin Davidson, Donnie Davidson Jr., Marvin (Ashley) Heaggans Jr., Antionnette (Clorrisa) Heaggans, Tamia Heaggans, Brittany McCain, Shakeema McCain, Ambricka McCain, Marzel Allison, Isaiah Stevenson, Charleston Heaggans, Charli Heaggans, Shamia Davis, Rafi Blount and Randall Russell; forty-five great grandchildren; several great great grandchildren; two godchildren, LaTina Mack Johnson and Emily Ramseur; a special niece, Patricia Walls; a host of Church Mothers, including Vivian Kesler; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, neighbors, Church Family and friends.

Celebration of Life Services will be conducted Monday, June 14, 2024, at Christian Outreach of the Piedmont Inc. Bishop Glenn J. Usry is Pastor, Dr. Martha W. Starks will officiate, and Pastor Virginia Brown will eulogize. Burial will follow in the Oakwood Cemetery.

Mrs. Heaggans will remain at Rutledge and Bigham Funeral Home, 603 South Center Street, Statesville, NC 28677, until taken to the church to lie in state at 12:30 p.m. Members of the family will receive friends at the church from 1 until 2 p.m., but will assemble at the residence of his daughter and son-in-law, Gwen and Craig “Dap” Morrison, 623 Greenway Drive, Statesville, NC 28677.
