James “Colin” Mitchell, 79, of Union Grove, N.C., passed away Saturday, August 3, 2024, at Atrium Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center following a brief illness.
Colin was born to Kenneth and Alda Mitchell on February 5, 1945. He was a veteran of the United States Army. He worked as a Rural Carrier for the United States Postal Service. He served Route 1 Union Grove for 52 years as a conscientious and dedicated mail carrier.
He was an excellent carpenter, a gifted wood worker, and an automotive enthusiast. He had an unending work ethic.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Bud and Kenny Mitchell, and a nephew, Gary Mitchell.
He is survived by Jan, his wife of 55 years, of the home; his “boys,” David (Melissa) and Randy (Rebecca); four grandchildren, Justin, Andrew, Allyson, and Hannah Mitchell; a brother, Jack (Polly); and a sister, Mary Alice (Richard); two nephews, Lynn Mitchell and Bryant Johnston; and two nieces, Sharon Mitchell and Angela Caudle (Doug).
Colin will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
A graveside service will be held Wednesday, August 7, at 11 a.m. at Grassy Knob Baptist Church Cemetery in Union Grove.
He will lie in state at Nicholson Funeral Home from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, August 6.
The family would like to thank the Union Grove Fire Department, EMTs, the staffs of the ER Department at Iredell Memorial Hospital and ICU Unit at Atrium Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, along with the the staff at Nicholson Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Colin’s memory to the Grassy Knob Church Cemetery.

Colin carried the mail on my route for 50 years. He will surely be missed. Prayers for all his family today and in the days ahead.
Colin was a beloved man from a terrific family.
