Jimmy “Jim” Lyerly Campbell, 85, of Cleveland, N.C., died Sunday, July 21, 2024, at his home following a lengthy illness.
Born in Rowan County on May 5, 1939, he was a son of the late Clyde Hope Campbell and Helen Lyerly Campbell. He was also preceded in death by a son, Dean Edward Campbell; sisters, Bonnie Collins and Evelyn Morgan; and a grandchild, Elizabeth Campbell.
He was a conductor and brakeman in the railroad industry for 33 years. He enjoyed farming, mostly beef cattle and gardening. He was a 1957 graduate of Cleveland High School, where he played basketball and was voted the best dressed in his class.
Survivors include a son, Mark Campbell; a sister, Dorothy Hoague; and a brother-in-law, Warren Morgan. Also surviving are two grandchildren, Madison Queen (Jacob) and Taylor Campbell; and three great grandchildren, Aubrey, Dawson and Warren Campbell.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Friday at Old Providence Presbyterian Church Cemetery with Pastor Keith Mason officiating.
