On December 20, 2024, Joel Brian Hutchens passed away unexpectedly at his residence at the age of 39. Born on August 30, 1985, Joel was a talented mechanic, carpenter, and outdoorsman, as well as a beloved son, brother, and uncle.

Joel will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, and humor. He never met a stranger or an animal in need — whether a cat or a dog — that he could turn away.

His hobbies reflected his adventurous spirit and love for the outdoors. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, hiking, camping, anything with a motor and two wheels, and cycling — both mountain biking and rail trails.

Joel cherished his nieces and embraced every opportunity to spoil “the wieners.” A 2004 Honor Scholar graduate of NIHS and a Dean’s List alumnus of MCC, Joel was self-employed at the time of his passing, utilizing his exceptional technical skills.

Left to honor his memory are his mother, Janice Combs (Hutchens) Sigmon; his sister, Jenna Sigmon; his brother, Jerry “Dale” Hutchens; his aunt, Rhonda Southard (Scott); and his cousin, Allison Southard. He is also survived by his beloved “wiener nieces,” Joey and Zena, who held a special place in his heart.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, the Iredell County Humane Society, or Fifth Street Ministries — organizations that resonated deeply with Joel’s values and compassion.

The family will arrange a private memorial service at a later date.

Cavin-Cook Funeral Home & Crematory, Mooresville, is proudly serving the Hutchens family. Condolences may be made to the family at www.cavin-cook.com.
