John Frances Grassi, 79, of Mooresville, N.C., and formerly of Plains, Pa., passed away on June 10, 2024. He was born in Old Forge, Pa., on May 4, 1945.

John was preceded in death by his parents, John P. and Theresa Grassi; and sister Mary Jane Sheperis. He is survived by his wife Marlene A. and children, John Kolessar (Kim) and Robert Kolessar (Stacey); grandchildren, Jacob (Caraline), Ryne, Ethan, Nicholas, Rook, and Kai; siblings, Susan George, and Dana Grassi, and Patricia Gavigan; and many nieces and nephews.

John was a 1964 graduate of Northeast High School in Luzerne County, Pa. He retired from a career with the Painters Local 41, Wilkes-Barre, Pa. He then had a 30-year career as a maintenance custodian at St. Therese’s Parrish in Shavertown, Pa. After moving to North Carolina, he worked part-time at BJ’s Warehouse in Mooresville, where he loved to strike up conversations with customers and co-workers.

John was known for his tremendous work ethic and love of family. His quick wit and sense of humor were very apparent to all who encountered him. A lover of dogs, he had many hobbies, including reading, listening to music, gardening, and rooting for the Phillies and Eagles. He loved spending time with his family and going on vacations.

Most important to John was his family. He will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, Pop-Pop, brother, uncle, and friend.

A prayer service be held to celebrate and remember John’s life at Cavin-Cook Funeral Home on Thursday, June 13, at 6 pm.
